Hands-on LiDAR processing course
The hands-on course will be 4 hours long, and will be held in parallel to some paper or poster ForestSAT2014 sessions. The teacher will be Dr. Martin Isenburg who is the developer of LAStools and the founder of rapidlasso GmbH.
LAStools is an award-winning software suite for fast LiDAR processing developed by rapidlasso GmbH. It is a modular set of highly efficient, batch-scriptable, multicore command line tools that can classify, tile, convert, filter, raster, triangulate, contour, clip, and polygonize LiDAR data (to name just a few). All of the tools can also be run via a GUI and are available as a LiDAR processing toolbox for ArcGIS (9.3, 10.0, 10.1, and 10.2) of as well as for QGIS (1.8, 2.0, 2.2).
In recent month LAStools has seen new developments especially targeting forestry applications, such as the computation of new forestry metrics in lascanopy.exe and the creation of pit-free canopy height models. The course will cover an end-to-end pipeline of processing raw LiDAR into raster and vector derivatives.
Only ForestSAT2014 registered users are admitted, the number of participants will be limited to 50 people on a first-registered first-served basis. Those interested in participating are requested to:
(1) register to the ForestSAT2014 conference, contributing with 20 € fee to cover the organizing expenses (you will have to check the “LAStools course” button during the on-line registration process).
(2) bring their own Windows laptops (you will be given a LAStools installation and example data to do the LiDAR processing exercises yourself).
